Dog-friendly canyon walks when the neighborhood loop is getting old.
You do not have to drive to the mountains for a dirt-trail dog day. San Diego’s open-space system puts canyon trails inside the city, often minutes from residential neighborhoods.
Navajo Canyon
The City specifically identifies Navajo Canyon as an excellent dog-walking area with wide access paths. A useful Mission Valley/Del Cerro-area alternative when you want dirt underfoot without turning the outing into a full-day hike.
Maple Canyon
Another canyon the City specifically highlights for dog walking. Its central location makes it a strong option for Bankers Hill and nearby neighborhoods when you want a nature break close to downtown.
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve
A flexible longer outing with relatively gentle terrain and multiple distance options. Keep dogs leashed and bring water; inland sections can get hot quickly.
Black Mountain Open Space
A more exposed option for cooler mornings and seasons. City rules require dogs to remain leashed, and the park closes from sunset to sunrise.
Heat matters more than mileage
San Diego canyon trails can feel dramatically hotter than the coast. For dogs, exposed ground temperature and limited shade can turn an easy route into a bad idea. Earlier starts, extra water and a willingness to bail are part of the plan.
