San Diego dog rules without the guesswork.
San Diego is unusually good for dog days, but the rules change depending on whether you are at a city park, beach, Mission Bay, canyon, County park or designated off-leash area. This is the practical version.
City parks and trails
Leash: 8 feet maximum
The City of San Diego requires dogs to be leashed in city parks, including trails and canyons, except inside designated off-leash areas. Dogs should stay leashed until they are inside the posted off-leash boundary.
Dog Beach + Fiesta Island
The two major city leash-optional beach/bay destinations
Dog Beach at the west end of the San Diego River Floodway is a designated off-leash beach. Fiesta Island is leash-optional outside restricted areas, including protected nesting areas and the Youth Aquatic Center/Camp.
Fiesta Island is currently listed by the City as open daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Seasonal habitat buffer zones can also close portions of the island.
Other San Diego beaches and Mission Bay
Time restrictions matter
Outside Dog Beach and Fiesta Island, dog access to beach and bay areas is restricted by time and season. Current City guidance says Mission Bay restrictions are 9 a.m.–4 p.m. from October 31 through March 31 and 9 a.m.–6 p.m. from April 1 through October 31. Outside restricted hours, dogs must remain leashed.
Open-space canyons
Leashed dogs are welcome on designated trails
City open-space rules require dogs to remain leashed. The City specifically calls out Navajo Canyon and Maple Canyon as good dog-walking areas with wide access paths.
San Diego County parks
Most allow dogs; County leash limit is 6 feet
San Diego County says dogs are allowed in almost all County parks, with an exception for trails at Agua Caliente. Dogs on County park trails must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet. County guidance also says two dogs are included with a campsite fee, while additional dogs may carry a nightly fee where allowed.
Restaurant patios
Dog-friendly patios are optional, not automatic
San Diego County guidance allows food operators to choose to permit dogs in outdoor patio dining areas under applicable rules. Non-service animals are not allowed in indoor dining areas, and dogs entering a permitted patio should be able to access it directly from outdoors.
